Award-Winning Professional Dog Trainer in Northwest Arkansas

Helping Dogs And Their Humans Understand Each Other Better

Good dog training is rarely about creating perfect behavior.

Most of the time, people are simply trying to make everyday life feel calmer again with quieter walks, less stress around visitors, more confidence outdoors and a stronger sense of connection with their dog.

At Zen Dog NWA, training is approached with patience, structure, communication, and real-world understanding built through years of working with dogs of all kinds, especially the ones many people had already given up on.

ABOUT US

Hi, I'm Lola.

I began training dogs in 2001, long before Zen Dog NWA officially existed. â€‹â€‹â€‹

In the beginning, I took in dogs from a shelter in Tulsa. These were dogs with big behavioral problems that made them very hard to adopt. Many struggled with fear, aggression, anxiety or were just too wild to handle.

Some of them were running out of time.

Working with those shelter dogs completely changed how I looked at behavior. It taught me that dogs labeled as “difficult” are usually just overwhelmed, misunderstood or confused about how to act calmly in a busy world.

That lesson still shapes everything we do here today. Over the years, I have focused on helping dogs with severe aggression, fear and behavior struggles, as well as training service dogs.

I also brought that same dedication to the broader training industry as one of the co-authors of the 2024 LIMA Guidelines (Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive).

But whether I am helping a person train a life-saving service dog or helping a local family with a wild puppy, the goal is the same. Every dog is an individual with their own personality. And training should never feel like a one-size-fits-all checklist.

Some dogs need rules.

Some need confidence.

Some need clear communication.

And some just need someone willing to understand why they are acting out in the first place.

Training In A Real-Life Environment

Zen Dog NWA operates on a family farm with over 45 acres of trails, large play areas, and natural environments where dogs are exposed to realistic everyday situations throughout the day.

Dogs here experience:

  • walking trails

  • other dogs

  • children

  • Outdoor games

  • movement and activity

  • changing environments

  • household-style noise and distractions

We don’t believe dogs learn best inside perfectly controlled, silent environments disconnected from real life.

Because life usually isn’t quiet.

Eventually, dogs need to explore sidewalks, visitors, distractions, parks, excitement, movement, and unpredictability in a calm and manageable way. Training should help prepare them for those situations gradually and realistically instead of only teaching behavior inside sterile spaces.

As Lola often says:

“We don’t train in a sterile environment. I promise it’s just as noisy here as it is at your home. Maybe even louder.”

Why choose Zen Dog Training

No scaring, only clear talk

Dogs learn best when we are clear with them. We communicate with a full spectrum of communication and tools so your dog clearly understands both what we want, as well as what we don't want. Our methods follow strict LIMA standards (Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive) to ensure humane, balanced and reliable results.

Daily Routines Help Them Relax

Just like us, dogs feel better when they know what and when to do. Simple daily routines and clear home boundaries help them feel safe and calm down.

Practicing both indoor and outdoor

Listening inside a quiet living room is easy. The real test is outside. Because we are located right next to the Slaughter Pen Trail, we take dogs straight onto the busy Razoback Greenway. Training around fast bikes, runners and other pups teaches your dog how to ignore distractions and stay calm anywhere.

Taking Things Step by Step

Changing behavior doesn't happen overnight. Trust and good habits come from slowing down, being patient and showing up for your dog every day. We are here to help you build a bond that lasts all life long.

WHAT TRAINING LOOKS LIKE HERE

Calm, Practical, Real-World Guidance

There’s a lot of noise in the dog training world today, quick-fix promises, viral advice and unrealistic expectations that often leave owners feeling more overwhelmed than before.

But meaningful progress is usually much quieter than that.

It happens slowly through consistency, communication, structure, repetition and learning how to better understand the dog in front of you.

For many owners, training is not really about commands alone.

It’s about wanting life to feel manageable again.

  • A calmer walk.

  • Less chaos around guests.

  • More confidence outdoors.

  • A dog that can settle peacefully at home.

  • A stronger sense of trust and communication.

That’s the kind of progress we care about most at Zen Dog NWA.

Not perfection.

Just a better life together.
